Sex Differences in the Gut Microbiome Drive Hormone-Dependent Regulation of Autoimmunity

Hi Lab,

This is the paper I mentioned in Journal Club.  They use non-obese diabetic (type 1 diabetes) mice to show that the elevated levels of testosterone, caused by commensal microbe colonization, protect the male mice from type 1 diabetes.  Transferring gut microbes from adult males to immature females causes a change in the females’ gut microbiome, which increased testosterone levels, and thus reduced autoimmunity, protecting against type 1 diabetes.
